Aloha from Laureen Kim in San Francisco

Aloha kakou,

Things in San Francisco are going well. I've lived in the SF Bay Area since graduation. My husband Alan and I have lived in San Francisco for over 20 years. Our son Alapai is finishing up his freshman year at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY - it's in Tommy Thompson's part of the country.

I am wrapping up my second two year term as President of the Northern California Region of the Kamehameha Schools Alumni Association. At the end of June I'll turn the reins over to someone else. It's been both fun and hard work. The last four years have seen real problems for the school. My first Board of Presidents meeting (Presidents of all the regions meet several times a year) coincided with the first of the Doe case appeals. When that decision went to Doe, we had a large rally here with over a thousand people. The en banc hearing took place in San Francisco and we hosted the Bishop Estate trustees, Dee Jay Mailer and other KS people. We just recently had an alumni meeting with all three headmasters and it was wonderful to see so many alumni in attendance.

Even when I'm no longer President I intend to continue with programs our region produces. Right now I'm very excited about the possibility of having Anna (Lui-Kwan) and Danny Akaka here in September to present a Hawaiian culture program to our Northern California community.

These days I'm working part-time in the library at the high school my son attended. I had been volunteering while he was a student, and when he graduated they offered to pay me to do what I had been doing for free. For me, it's a great job where I'm able to see what new books are out, and do some research. In particular I've worked with students who have been writing about Hawaiian topics - the hula in the 19th century and the colony at Kalaupapa, Moloka'i.

We have season tickets for three seats to San Francisco Giants games, so if you're in town and interested in going to a game, please let me know. My email is kawahine@mindspring.com, my phone number is 415.221.9310
